PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND CANCER PREVENTION
Physical activity has been found to help prevent the onset of cancer. The exact reason for this is unclear, although several theories have been proposed. For example, some researchers attribute the decreased incidence of cancer among people who are physically active to their being leaner. Excess fat is associated with cancer of the colon, prostate, endometrium, and breast. Whether physical activity has a direct effect on cancer or an indirect effect by reducing body fat is unknown.
The National Cancer Institute also reports that men who exert the energy equivalent of walking 10 or more miles per week have half the risk of developing colon cancer of less active men. One theory explaining this finding is that exercise increases the rate of transit of food through the digestive tract. If there are carcinogens in the fecal stream, the faster they proceed through the system, the less chance there is that they will attach themselves to mucosa lining the tract and develop into cancer.
There is also evidence that women who exercise regularly are less prone to develop cancer of the breast or of the reproductive system. One theory relates a lower rate of these cancers and exercise to the amount of body fat. Fat is needed to make estrogen. This theory hypothesizes that excess fat increases the risk of these cancers because it leads to too much estrogen being produced.
These findings pertain to moderate amounts of exercise. That does not mean that very intense exercise is also protective of cancer. In fact, some researchers believe that very intense exercise is actually detrimental because it suppresses the immune system, resulting in the body being less able to ward off carcinogens. The discovery by researchers that prostate cancer is more common among male athletes lends credence to this theory.
