CAUSES OF CANCER: HEREDITARY AND CONGENITAL FACTORS
Hereditary factors appear to be related to some cancers. For example, retinoblastoma, a malignant eye tumor occurring in infants and young children, has been found to be hereditary. More common, however, is a predisposition, or tendency, of members of a family to acquire a particular form of cancer. In some types of cancers, such as cancer of the breast, uterus, stomach, intestine, and colon, immediate family members face a greatly increased risk. However, it should be noted that a predisposition does not mean that a person will definitely develop the disease. It does mean that people in such families should be alert to signs of possible conditions, have regular checkups, and develop healthy eating and exercise patterns. Congenital causes, or cancer occurring during the development of the embryo during the prenatal period, involve a few special groups of tumors affecting infants, children, and young adults. Congenital tumors (most are benign) account for only a small fraction of tumors and cancer.
New findings in genetics have identified the importance of oncogenes; the genes found in tumor cells whose activation is associated with the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells. An analysis of the products of these oncogenes may predict which tumors are likely to recur after surgery.
