PREVENTING CANCER: WHAT IS CANCER?
What we call cancer is not a single disease but rather a group of more than 100 diseases involving abnormal cell growth. In normal body cells, the rate of cell division is under precise control. Cancer cells, in contrast, grow wildly, divide rapidly, and assume irregular shapes; tumors develop and invade nearby normal tissue. These abnormal cells eventually spread to distant body areas via the blood and lymphatic system; this process of spreading is referred to as metastasis. At the time of diagnosis, the spread of cancer to other body parts has already occurred in 6 of 10 patients. For those individuals, eradicating the deadly cells is much more difficult.
Cancer is capable of destroying the body in a number of ways, eventually resulting in death. Cancer cells actively divide and crowd out normal specialized cells; they rob vital nutrients from and "starve" normal cells. Eventually, normal tissues, organs, and body systems cannot perform their vital functions and death occurs. Malignant tumors may obstruct blood vessels, the digestive and urinary tracts, or other body parts, eliminating the normal function of an entire system or organ. Tumors may also decrease or eliminate the intake or absorption of nutrients, causing the body literally to waste away, or they may decrease the capacity of the lungs to oxygenate blood. In addition, the body's immune system is weakened and death may occur from the inability to fight invading pathogens. Patients are considered cured if there is no evidence of cancer for five years; others may survive in remission, an asymptomatic state in which the spread of cancerous cells is assumed to be temporarily stopped.
