HOW TO PREVENT CORONARY HEART DISEASE: LOW-DENSITY AND HIGH-DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS & OTHER RISK FACTORS IN SUMMARY

Low-Density and High-Density Lipoproteins
Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are produced in the liver and released into the bloodstream where they carry cholesterol cells throughout the body. When LDLs carry more cholesterol than the body requires, the cholesterol can build up on the artery walls.
High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are also produced by the liver and released into the bloodstream. However, they help prevent buildup on the artery walls by picking up unused cholesterol and returning it to the liver.
A total cholesterol/HDL ratio 5:1 begins to provide some protection from coronary heart disease. One way to increase HDL levels is by engaging in physical activity.
Other Risk Factors
Hypertension, obesity and overweight, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking tobacco, and a family history of heart disease are other risk factors for CHD. Systolic blood pressure above 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure above 90 mm Hg is termed hypertension. High blood pressure forces the heart to work harder and can lead to strokes, atherosclerosis, and heart attack.
People who have gained over 20 pounds since they were 18 years old have doubled their risk of having a heart attack. People who experience a great deal of stress and people who live sedentary lifestyles also subject themselves to a greater risk of heart disease. Furthermore, smoking tobacco results in blood vessels constricting (thereby increasing blood pressure), rapid heartbeat, and damage to the interior walls of the arteries.
One factor that is irreversible is a history of heart disease in the individual's family. However, lifestyle will affect how soon heart disease will manifest itself and the degree to which it will interfere and/or cut short one's life.
