OTHER RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE: SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE, SMOKING TOBACCO & FAMILY HISTORY

Sedentary Lifestyle
We have just discussed the effect of stress on physical activity. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle does not allow for the production of sufficient HDL, strengthening of the heart muscle, or control of mild hypertension. To make matters worse, inactivity is associated with overweight and obesity, two other risk factors for CHD. And, inactivity deprives you of an outlet for the release of built-up stress by-products.
Smoking Tobacco
Research has linked smoking with various diseases such as cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. When a person smokes, the blood vessels constrict thereby causing increased blood pressure. In addition, the heart speeds up in response to nicotine, a central nervous system stimulant. Furthermore, cigarettes contain substances that can damage the inside walls of the arteries. Once they have been damaged, it is easier for cholesterol and other substances to adhere to, and accumulate in, the arteries. All of this, coupled with carbon dioxide from cigarette smoke replacing oxygen in the bloodstream, means the heart is overworking and heart disease is more likely.
Family History
Not all risk factors are amenable to change. Heredity, for example, is not. Some people are born with a predisposition to heart disease. However, that predisposition only means there is the potential to develop CHD. Your lifestyle will influence whether you do and when you do. Some people prefer to use a family history of heart disease as an excuse for behaving in ways that are unhealthy for the heart. That is unfortunate because they might be able to delay or even prevent CHD if they change their behavior.
