PREVENTING CANER: WHAT IS CANCER & CAUSES OF CANCER IN SUMMARY
What Is Cancer?
Cancer is not a single disease but rather a group of several hundred diseases. Cancer involves abnormal cells that grow wildly, divide rapidly, and assume irregular shapes. Tumors develop and invade nearby tissue, and these cells may spread to distant parts of the body in a process referred to as metastasis. Once metastasis occurs, a cure is more problematic. Patients may be considered cured if there is no evidence of cancer in five years, whereas others may survive in an asymptomatic state in which the spread of cancerous cells is assumed to be temporarily stopped (referred to as remission).
There are different forms of cancer, named according to the type of tissue involved. Carcinomas begin in the epithelial cells that form the lining of various organs of the body. Sarcomas arise in the mesodermal or middle layers of tissue that form the bones, muscles, and connective tissue. Lymphomas develop in the infection-fighting regions of the body.
Causes of Cancer
Cancer can be caused by occupational agents; environmental pollution; chronic irritation or tissue damage; viruses; radiation; individual characteristics and/or personality; hereditary and congenital factors; precancerous conditions; tobacco use; estrogen treatment; excessive alcohol consumption; and diets high in fatty foods, salt-cured foods, and smoked foods and low in fruits and vegetables.
