TREATMENT OF CANCER: BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS & CHEMOTHERAPY

Bone Marrow Transplants
Leukemia is sometimes treated with hone marrow transplants. Unless a compatible donor is found, the "warrior cells" (T lymphocytes) attack the leukemia patient, producing a fatal condition called graft versus host disease. For the procedure to succeed, marrow must come from an identical twin or a brother or sister with closely matched blood. Less than 30 percent of leukemia patients have such a donor.
Researchers are evaluating a new technique in which a portion of the patient's own marrow is removed before treatment, saved, and later restored by transplantation. This procedure eliminates the problem of locating a suitable donor and allows the patient to tolerate larger doses of anticancer drugs or radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a treatment that uses Chemicals (drugs) to seek out and attack cancer cells. More than 25 drugs have been identified that will poison cancer cells and stop or slow their growth; all of them damage normal cells and cannot be used indefinitely. In addition, most of the drugs have serious side effects.
The control of hormones in the body has been used with varying degrees of success in treating breast cancer and prostate cancer.
It is clear that chemicals can alter the genetic
message of cancer cells and change them into cells that can no longer grow. Although this principle of transforming cancer to benign cells, called differentiation therapy, is still in the experimental stages, it shows great promise.
