CAUSES OF CANCER: CANCER PREVENTION
Although not all cancers can be prevented, more than two thirds probably can be. If people gave up smoking, ate diets consisting of less fat and more vegetables and fruits, limited the amount of alcohol they ingested, and protected themselves from exposure to the sun, the decrease in the incidence of cancer would be significant. Here are some things you can do to decrease your chances of contracting cancer, or if you do contract it, to detect it early:
Abstain from using tobacco in any form, including the smokeless variety.
Eliminate or reduce your consumption of alcohol; drink only in moderation.
Avoid contact with known carcinogens whenever possible.
Decrease your exposure to the sun; avoid sunbathing for long periods of time; and use a sunscreen with the appropriate sun protection factor (SPF) for your skin type any time you plan to be in the sun.
Follow a dietary plan that increases your consumption of vitamins A and C, cruciferous vegetables (for example, cauliflower and broccoli), and fiber. Reduce your consumption of artificial sweeteners, heat-charred food, nitrite-cured or smoked foods, fats, and calories.
Maintain recommended body weight and fat.
Learn how to do breast (females) and testicular (males) self-examinations and do them regularly.
Check for changes in your skin that might indicate skin cancer.
Report any family history of cancer to your doctor and have that history noted on your medical records.
