CAUSES OF CANCER: PRECANCEROUS CONDITIONS & TOBACCO USE

Precancerous Conditions
Some precancerous conditions—but not all—tend to develop into cancer, with the cause of cancer being the same as the cause for the precancerous condition. Benign tumors, a mass or overgrowth of cells in the mouth, lip, tongue, or cheek, or a patch of cells on the skin (small scab, scaly patch, brown to black warts) fall into the category of precancerous conditions. Moles are not precancerous, and the average person has about twenty-two to twenty-three of them. A mole that is constantly irritated is much more likely to become malignant. Benign tumors should be removed as soon as possible, regardless of how low the probability of developing cancer is.
Tobacco Use
There is a strong link between tobacco use and lung cancer, cancer of the lip and mouth, and cancer of the pharynx, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, and bladder. Smoking accounts for approximately 30 percent of all cancer deaths. The incidence of lung cancer is related to the number of cigarettes smoked, the degree of inhalation, and the number of years one has smoked. The American Cancer Society estimates that cigarette smoking is responsible for 90 percent of lung cancer cases among men and 79 percent among women— more than 87 percent overall. The gap between male and female levels of lung cancer has been narrowing, due to the increased number of women who have been smoking for 10 years or more. Use of smokeless tobacco also increases the risk of cancer of the mouth, larynx, throat, and esophagus.
