Chronic Irritation or Tissue Damage
Repeated low-grade tissue damage may lead to cancer. Gallstones on the lining of the gallbladder, some tissue injuries, a few chronic infections to certain organs, chronically infected scars (such as burn scars), repeated ulcerations, and bladder infections have been linked to cancer.
Viruses
Some malignancies in animals may be caused by viral agents, and considerable research is under way to identify viruses related to cancer in human beings. Studies have linked acute leukemia, sarcoma, and melanoma to viral agents. At one time, it was believed that breast cancer might be caused by a virus, but the majority of scientists today reject this view. The virus that causes herpes has been linked to cancer of the cervix.
Individual Susceptibility
The known and suspected causes of cancer discussed in this section account for only some of the cases of cancer that develop. Also, most people who are exposed even to recognized carcinogens do not develop cancer. It therefore appears that there exists within the living organism a quality of individual susceptibility. That susceptibility seems to be related to personality factors. A "cancer personality" has been identified and characterized as depressed, rigid, self-condemning, and unable to develop meaningful relationships with others. Scientists theorize that some people with this personality pattern are unable to release their pent-up feelings and so turn them inward, thereby disrupting their hormonal levels or other aspects of metabolism. This theory is becoming an important focus of research.
