CAUSES OF CANCER: OCCUPATIONAL AGENTS
Certain physical and chemical environmental agents tend to contribute to cancer information. In 1775, coal soot was identified as a contributor to cancer of the scrotum. One hundred years later, during the Industrial Revolution, a type of lubricating oil constantly sprinkled on men working beside cotton-spinning machines was also linked to this type of cancer. The air in mines contains a fine radioactive dust which can cause lung cancer in miners. During the 1920s, bone cancer was observed in factory workers who painted numbers on the hands of watch faces with a radium compound to make them glow in the dark. By twirling the end of a fine brush in their mouths to acquire a "tip" before dipping the brush into the compound, the workers absorbed minute quantities of radium, which eventually worked into the bones. Researchers and epidemiologists continue searching for carcinogens in today's workplace.
